Brooches and other clothing ornaments from the Viking Age

This page offers you a selection of our brooches - fibula - from the Viking Age. Most of them were clothing ornaments originally, but since all of them had a partially or wholly worn pin when found, we have mounted a more functional pin on the reproductions. Some of our pieces served an entirely different function originally, but we think that their design makes them well suited as jewellery. Dess. nr. 165 Animal-shaped jewellery (fibula) from Germanic Iron Age, ca. 600-800 A.D. Found at Olsker on the island of Bornholm. The motifs of the jewellery are those favoured at the time: Variously represented stylized animal figures. Thus, the ornament as a whole is an animal seen from above, while two other animal figures, seen from the side, are placed on either side of the centre line of the ornament. Another highly stylized animal figure is embodied in the tracery of the central field. Produced in silver and bronze
Dess. nr. 176 Silver mask from Gudme, Island of Funen, made around 400 A.D. The stylized face with its angular moustache and brushed back hair is an excellent examole of Iron Age art. It probably had a religious significance or was a kind of royal emblem. Produced in silver

Dess. nr. 303 Århus mask, depicted on a runic stone. The mask was presumably made of leather and used by a shaman or similar. Late viking Age, about 1000 A.D. The runic stone is at Moesgård Prehistoric Museum. Produced in silver and bronze.
Dess. nr. 312 Buckle in Urnes style from the Late Viking Age, 1100 A.D. The original was found at Lindholm Høje near Aalborg. A fine example of the animal style of the Late Viking Age. The large animal struggles with the snake, symbolizing the struggle between good and evil. The motif was often used in early Christian art, and is found on runic stones as well as on early Christian churches made of wood. The Urnes style gets it name from the wooden church in Urnes in Western Norway. Produced in silver
